8 Simple Styling Tips That Make Every Summer Outfit Feel More Put Together
One of my favorite things about getting dressed in the summer is how uncomplicated it can be.
Once the weather warms up, I find myself reaching for the same pieces over and over again—my favorite dresses, sandals I can walk in all day, woven bags, and simple gold jewelry. My closet definitely has its favorites, and by July I'm usually wearing some version of the same outfit on repeat. There aren't a million layers to think about or complicated outfits to put together, and somehow those are always the looks I end up loving the most.
Over the years, I've realized that looking put together usually has less to do with buying a whole new wardrobe and more to do with wearing the pieces you already love in a thoughtful way.
These are a few of the little styling habits I always come back to every summer.
Let Your Dress Do the Work
There are plenty of mornings when I don't feel like standing in front of my closet trying to figure out what to wear. That's exactly why I love a good summer dress.
It's one piece, it's comfortable, and somehow it always looks polished without much effort. Whether it's a breezy linen midi, a simple white poplin dress, or a vintage floral find, I know I can throw it on, slip into a pair of sandals, and be ready to head out the door in just a few minutes.
Sometimes the easiest outfit ends up being the best one.
Find Your Summer Uniform
I used to think repeating outfits meant I wasn't very stylish.
Now I think it's one of the easiest ways to define your personal style.
The older I get, the more I appreciate having a handful of outfits I never have to second-guess. Instead of chasing every new trend, I've started paying attention to the pieces I naturally reach for week after week.
For me, it's usually some version of a dress or an easy pair of linen trousers, simple gold jewelry, sandals I can spend all day in, and a tote bag that goes with everything.
I think every woman has her own version of a summer uniform, you just have to notice what yours already is.
Choose Natural Fabrics Whenever You Can
If there's one thing I've learned after a few summers of feeling way too hot, it's that fabric matters.
Linen, cotton, and lightweight knits always end up being the pieces I reach for most. They're breathable, lightweight, and have that relaxed look that somehow makes even the simplest outfit feel elevated.
A pair of white linen trousers with a simple tank or tee is one of those combinations that never really goes out of style. It's easy, timeless, and somehow always feels like summer.
Don't Save Your Favorite Pieces
This might be the styling tip I've had to remind myself of the most.
It's so easy to save your favorite dress for vacation or keep your nicest bag tucked away for a special occasion. But the older I get, the more I realize those ordinary coffee runs, lunch dates, and Saturday mornings are the moments I actually want to enjoy them.
Wear the dress you've been saving.
Carry the vintage bag.
Put on the earrings.
Your favorite pieces deserve more than a few days a year.
Add One Intentional Accessory
I've found that my favorite outfits are usually the simplest ones.
Instead of adding lots of accessories, I like choosing one piece that makes the whole outfit feel intentional. Maybe it's a woven tote, a gold bangle, a pair of gold hoops, or your favorite sunglasses.
Sometimes one beautiful detail is all an outfit needs.
Stick to a Simple Color Palette
One thing that's made getting dressed so much easier is having a closet where most things work together.
I naturally gravitate toward whites, creams, soft blues, chocolate brown, black, and the occasional buttery yellow, sage green, or soft pink during the summer months. I don't think everyone needs the exact same color palette, but having one you genuinely love makes mixing and matching feel almost effortless.
It also means you spend less time wondering if something goes together and more time simply enjoying getting dressed.
Wear Shoes You'll Actually Walk In
Summer has a funny way of turning quick errands into long afternoons.
You stop for coffee, wander through a bookstore, walk around the farmers market, and somehow end up staying out much longer than you planned.
That's why I've learned to choose shoes that are just as practical as they are pretty. I'd much rather spend the afternoon exploring than wishing I'd worn something different.
Leave Room for Your Personality
I think the best outfits always have one little detail that feels unmistakably you.
Maybe it's your signature gold jewelry, a fresh manicure, a favorite red lipstick, or the oversized button-down you throw over everything.
Trends will always come and go, but personal style is built from the little things you keep reaching for year after year. Those are usually the pieces that make an outfit feel the most memorable—and the most like you.
My Approach to Summer Style
The older I get, the less interested I am in having a closet full of clothes and the more interested I am in having a closet full of favorites.
The pieces that make getting dressed feel easy. The dress I instinctively reach for on warm mornings, the sandals I've worn everywhere from coffee dates to farmers markets, and the tote bag that somehow goes with every outfit and carries half my life inside it. Those are the pieces that define my style far more than anything trendy ever could.
I've realized that great style doesn't come from constantly buying more. It comes from knowing what you love, wearing it often, and feeling comfortable enough to make it your own.
At the end of the day, the outfits I remember most aren't necessarily the trendiest ones—they're the ones that made me feel the most like myself. I think that's the kind of wardrobe worth building, no matter the season.
Happy styling! <3
